“‘Have you ever heard of the 39 Steps?’

‘No. What’s that, a pub?’”

In fact, the 39 Steps is the code in John Buchan’s gripping spy novel, made into a film by Alfred Hitchcock in 1935 (from which this dialogue is taken), and remade in 1959 and 1978. Buchan took the idea of 39 steps from a feature on a cliff path in Kent, near to where he was staying when he wrote the book.

• Before it was rebuilt, Wembley Stadium in London, the ‘Mecca’ of soccer, also had 39 steps. They led from pitch level to the Royal Box, and teams had to climb them to receive their medals after cup finals. The new stadium has 107 steps to the Royal Box, so, given the physical state of most players by the time they‘ve played a game at Wembley, some sort of mechanical stairlift may be in order.

The Anglican Church is founded on the 39 Articles of Religion.
